You are in Charge of Stress

Many people experience stress. Of course, none experience it the same way: some run into it more often and the reasons are different as well. Partly, it would make many situations easier if people put more research into this topic. Putting wrong labels on stress can make any individual feel a lot worse.

For example, there is a difference between stress and distress. Stress may occur from different things: fear of taking an exam, disagreements within family or with friends, small car accidents, etc. In other words, it is something that causes tension. Distress is something prolonged or more extreme. It causes people to experience more anxiety and other negative emotions.

What makes a stressful situation worse is a lack of finding resources. There are always at least few places to reach out to! Imagine a family situation, where the father is working in other state due to work and comes home for a weekend every few weeks. This instance can cause a lot of stress because, harshly speaking, it partially turns into a single mom life. It involves a lot more parenting, discipline, and energy.

The first resource is money. The mom is actually not single and is receiving financial support by her spouse. There are also various programs that help families that are in need. There shouldn’t be a reason to wait until poverty to reach out for help. That’s why those programs exist – to help people, so stress doesn’t “help” them give up.

The second resource is friends. Having friends or not having friends is a different story. For those that do – don’t miss the opportunity. Even if the problem is not solved, they can provide a lot of emotional support. When we feel love and know that someone believes in us, we are more motivated to keep going through various challenges.

Third, extended family is big help! Whether it is the husband's or wife’s family – there are a lot of people that are willing to serve. In fact, they would be the most understanding, knowing the circumstance the mother is in. Having a family member is a benefit because they have a good idea of your preferences and will find appropriate words of support. The main point is – don’t be afraid to ask for help! Putting in effort is important but receiving help doesn’t make anyone lazy or less hard working.

The next resource is religious organizations. Knowing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints community, there are many different ways to get help. Counseling with the bishop, being involved with the members, ministering opportunities, and others can help during stressful situations. Even outside of the LDS Church, other religions help in various ways for others to feel less lonely.

Finally, using your skills and talents in difficult situations. No matter if the times are easier or more difficult, most mothers have at least one skill they are very good at. It could either be a degree earned in one thing or another, being certified, or simply knowing the “how to.” A lot of stress within families comes from finances, and it’s important to remember to use the talents that you have. If someone says anything like, “I do not have any talents that would bring me income,” either it is not true, or it’s time to find a new hobby. 😊

I hope that these suggestions helped at least one person realize that we can be in charge of the of the stressful situations. There is always a solution, big or small. Take a deep breath, try your best, and stay strong. You got it!
